Reconstitution

How to dissolve lyophilized research peptides correctly — the standard diluent, the steps, and the mistakes to avoid.

💧

What reconstitution means

Research peptides arrive as a lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder. Reconstitution simply means dissolving that powder into a liquid so it can be measured and used. The standard diluent is bacteriostatic water — sterile water with a small amount of benzyl alcohol that limits microbial growth, giving the solution a longer usable window than plain sterile water.

The single most important idea: the amount of water you add sets the concentration. The peptide mass in the vial does not change — only how concentrated the resulting solution is.

🧪

Step by step

1

Temperature. Bring the peptide vial and the bacteriostatic water to room temperature before starting.

2

Draw the water. Pull your chosen volume of bacteriostatic water into a syringe — the volume determines the final concentration.

3

Add slowly. Inject the water down the inside glass wall of the vial, letting it run onto the powder gently — never blast it directly onto the peptide.

4

Do not shake. Swirl the vial gently until the solution is completely clear. Shaking can damage the peptide.

5

Store & label. Refrigerate at 2–8 °C and label the vial with compound, concentration and date.

Tip: The Peptide Calculator turns vial size and water volume into exact units per syringe mark — no manual math.
⚠️

Common mistakes to avoid

🤯 Shaking the vial

Vigorous shaking can degrade the peptide. Gentle swirling is all it needs.

💦 Spraying onto powder

Adding water with force directly on the powder can stress the peptide — run it down the glass wall.

🌡️ Cold components

Reconstituting straight from the fridge can cause issues — let everything reach room temperature first.

📝 No label

An unlabelled vial loses its concentration and date — always mark it immediately.

FAQ

How much water should I add?

Any volume works — it only changes the concentration. A larger volume gives a more dilute, easier-to-measure solution; a smaller volume is more concentrated. The Peptide Calculator shows the resulting units per mark.

Why bacteriostatic water and not sterile water?

The benzyl alcohol in bacteriostatic water inhibits microbial growth, so a reconstituted vial stays usable for weeks rather than being single-use.

The solution isn’t fully clear — what now?

Give it more time and gentle swirling. Most peptides dissolve fully; persistent cloudiness may indicate a handling issue.
